A legendary place, where once, at the bottom of the water were visible spots of reddish color.

A few steps from the Ursino Castle, along the Via S. Calogero, you will come across an ancient well entirely covered by the lava stone of the eruption of 1669.

A legendary place, where once, right at the bottom of the water that flowed there, were visible spots of reddish color. Magnesium and iron encrustations that in the imagination of Catania have become the bloodstains of Gammazita.

According to legend, during the French domination, a soldier fell in love with a young girl from Catania, Gammazita. Determined to make her his own, the soldier pursued and flattered the young woman, already betrothed.

The soldier’s insistence was such as to force the young woman’s family to hasten the marriage. But on that day, a few moments before he came to the church, Gammazita went to the well to draw from its source and the soldier took it. So, in order not to dishonor his family, Gammazita chose death and threw herself into the well.

Today it is possible to visit the well thanks to the guided visits of the association Gammazita, which takes care of its recovery and its valorization.
