Three days of worship, devotion, folklore and traditions, together with exhibitions and initiatives that accompany the days of the festival.
From February 3rd to 5th, Catania dedicates a grandiose feast to its patron Sant'Agata, a mixture of faith and folklore, which directly involves a few thousand faithful, engaged in towing the fercolo, and punctually attracts up to a million people, including tourists, curious and devoted.
To honor the saint, who according to tradition lived in Catania in the first half of the third century and there suffered torture and martyrdom for her refusal to abjure the Christian faith, fireworks, solemn celebrations and illuminated streets follow one another. from kilometers of illuminations, crowded processions and sumptuous historical processions unfold which renew the suggestions of ancient and never lost rites in the baroque city.
On the first day of celebrations the civil authorities, aboard the eighteenth-century carriage of the Senate, the religious and military ones parade in a procession, with figures in historical costume, following the eleven "candelore", the heavy wooden buildings, carved and gilded, made by ancient guilds of trades and carried on the shoulders of strong men, for the traditional appointment of the wax offering.
The day continues with the floral tribute of the firefighters who climb up to touch the highest point of the Cathedral to place a floral composition in the simulacrum of the heavenly protector, invoked for centuries against the fires and eruptions of Etna.
In the afternoon the international running trophy is held, and in the evening the first day of the three agatini days ends in Piazza Duomo with the performance of traditional songs in honor of the patron saint and with a fireworks show, famous for its intensity and beauty. chromaticity of his games.
The next day is that of the religious celebrations in honor of the Saint, it begins with the Mass of the Dawn, continues with the procession of the fercolo in the streets of the city whose "highlight" is the so-called cchianata de 'Cappuccini, during the which the fercolo is hauled up to the square of San Domenico. Subsequently, after the celebration in the church of Sant’Agata la Vetere, we continue the tour of the city and return to the Cathedral at the first light of dawn.
On February 5th the procession continues in the inner part of the city, and one of the most characteristic moments is the cchianata 'i Sangiulianu, in which the devotees once again run the very heavy fercolo. At dawn and sometimes even many hours later, the Saint returns to the cathedral greeted by devotees and a fireworks display.
