It is one of the oldest churches in the city, dating back to the first centuries AD. Almost totally destroyed by the 1963 earthquake, it was rebuilt by Antonio Amato who modified the main façade.

It’s one of the oldest churches in the city, in fact, the original structure was probably built in the early centuries AD, following in 1396, during Aragonese domination, it was named “Royal Chapel”  and after was established inside, in 1446, a college of canons by Pope Eugene VI, from which it derives its present name “Collegiata”.

After the earthquake in 1693, the Church was destroyed almost all and it was rebuilt by Antonio Amato, who moved the main entrance on the opposite side to the original one, which now looks out on the via Etnea. The “new ” eighteenth-century facade, in the distinctive style of late Catania baroque, was created by Stefano Ittar and presents characteristics concave and convex shapes remind an organ.

There are artistic values sculptures and frescoes inside, many of which were pictured by the Zafferana painter Giuseppe Sciuti in the nineteenth century.
