The church and the old monastery were built on the ruins of the ancient church and convent dedicated to Saint'Agata, razed to the ground by the earthquake of 1693.

Next to the Duomo, overlooking Via Vittorio Emanuele, we find the church of the Sant'Agata Abbey. The church and the former monastery were built on the ruins of the ancient church and convent dedicated to Sant'Agata, razed to the ground by the earthquake of 1693.

Completed in 1735, for some critics, the building represents the artistic masterpiece of the architect Vaccarini. In Sicilian Baroque style, the abbey presents itself with an imposing façade characterized by a "wave" movement, which gives a soft and sinuous look to the entire structure. The games of concavity and convexity also create a fascinating alternation of lights and shadows.

The single-order facade has a rich portal of late Renaissance style and the insignia of Sant'Agata fill the capitals structurally linked through statues, frames and balustrades. Inside the church looks like the praise of essentiality, on the Greek cross structure dominates the large dome. Among the works preserved inside, it is worth seeing the "Crucifix" by Ignazio Carnazza, made in 1696.
